It’s been a highs and lows hobby week. The highs being I’m getting at least some hobby in every day, even if just an hour. This means my Legions ‘Siege of Terra’ themed forces really are coming along at quite a nice clip. I can add another legion demi-company to the growing ‘done’ pile. Even got a few support detachments done as well so not just the bare bones core units. Oh no, it’s support weapons, terminators and air-taxi’s all the way for my boys in Imperial yellow.

All of these are already in the gallery with details on the painting etc. Just follow the ‘Imperial Fists’ link from the Legions menu on the left (or up above someplace if you are on a mobile device you cool kid you)

The shelf in the workshop cabinet is starting to fill up a bit quick, I think I may need to put one of the heresy armies back in storage to make some space. Not complaining, it’s a nice problem to have.

On the subject of heresy armies, I plan to give the Word Bearers an outing in the not to distant future. It means I may (will) use it as an excuse to add more units. Not decided what yet, but I feel they should start with ‘Vol’ and end in ‘kite’. Probably make “choom!” noises too. I haven’t pulled together a list and need to see the event pack first to see what the requirements are. But it will be nice to work on some more of the filthy traitors as I just adore the Word Bearers palette.

It will probably send me down a ‘daemon’ allies rabbit hole again knowing my tendency to get distracted easily.

The lows I mentioned. I think we all know what that was, the weekends pre-order debacle. The less said about that the better, but I can’t deny I’m disappointed not so much because I didn’t secure a copy of ‘The End and the Death: Vol III” to go with my others, but because of how awful the whole queue experience was. The system just doesn’t feel fit for purpose to me and I’ll just leave it at that.

Legions Imperialis bases

I promised I’d get back to this. Yes, I am basing all my vehicles for Legions Imperialis. I tried this out with some Sarissa precision MDF bases on the Blood Angels, but this was always intended to be a stop-gap until the round 2mm plastic bases were in circulation again. I’ll stick with the rectangular ones for the Angels going forward to be consistent, but all other forces I’ll be moving onto the plastic versions.

Why?

There are a number of reasons I prefer to base my vehicles; consistency of appearance, protecting the miniature and paint job during gaming. But the main reason is purely functional for transportation. I switched to using magnetic storage/transport cases a few years ago and have never looked back. The Legions Imperialis 2mm plastic bases have a nice and consistent 1mm recess underneath which fits a 5mm x 1mm disc magnet perfectly. Even the flying bases have a recess that fits a 4mm x 2mm cylinder magnet as neatly as if designed for it.

Any impact on gaming is really quite negligible in my view. It’s either a disadvantage to me, such as squeezing tanks through tiny gaps. Or practically none in real terms. The bases I’ve used so far don’t really overlap hull front or back and the sides don’t have an impact on detachment coherency if you are being consistent and still measuring from the hull. They also provide a nice measure of protection during gaming from paintwork being damaged or sponsons breaking from bad handling.

They provide no protection however from ballistic dice! Not even flare shields can save you from those weapons of miniature destruction sorry.

Challenges what’s in base contact for combat between infantry and vehicles? Not really. It’s easy to look and agree which miniatures are paired off in fights in my experience. As long as both players agree (and most I play are pretty laid back, it’s not the olympics) it makes for enjoyable games.

But in short, basically magnets, then because it looks awesome! And finally the added protection they provide.

I appreciate though aesthetically it’s not everyone’s taste and that’s fine. I was very much 50/50 myself whether to or not. In the end being able to magnetise everything easily tipped the scales for me.

Next detachment to get it’s colours?

Back to some vehicular action and the Predators from the launch box. Got these built, primed and the base yellow on so starting to pick out the weapons and some of the detailing. If everything goes to plan, and fingers crossed things will, I may have this armoured detachment game ready by the weekend.

After that, I’m kind of stumped. I could do some more infantry detachments, but I feel I want to wait to see what the next wave brings before I push on expanding either the Blood Angels or the Imperial Fists. I’ve got a good selection of flyers, Knights and Titans done, so maybe not those for now. Perhaps it’s time to start thinking about the Solar Auxilia.

I shall get these Preds done and then decide. How exciting!

Until next time, have a great week with the hobby.
